About the division
The Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Division (TSMD) of the Institute, popularly known as the Stat-Math Division, traces its roots to the erstwhile Research and Training School (RTS) in ISI Kolkata, and was formally established in 1975. It is the oldest and the largest academic division of the Institute.
Subsequently, when ISI centres were established in Delhi and Bangalore, Stat-Math units were added also in these locations. Currently, the Division has three units in Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangalore. The research interests of the division span across both mathematics and theoretical statistics.
The units are involved in both research and teaching at ISI, in particular contribute heavily to the teaching in undergraduate programs (B.Stat, B.Math and BSDS) and postgraduate programs (M. Math and M. Stat) of the institute.
The units also actively hosts visitors and organizes conferences, workshops and lecture series apart from regular seminars. Notably, the division organises Ashok Maitra Memorial Lectures and P. C. Mahalanobis Memorial lectures.
