About the Program
Master of Science in Quality Management Science is a two-year program offered by Indian Statistical Institute with the first year at Bangalore and second year at Hyderabad. The course is designed to create Data Scientists with exceptional skills in Statistics, Machine Learning, OR and Quality as major fields. Every organization wants to predict customer behaviour and provide insight to strengthen their business with the help of accurate and reliable data using the data-driven analytical approach with extensive application of statistical analysis, exploratory and predictive modelling. The program is designed in such a way that the students are given sound theoretical knowledge with live project applications needed for Data Science, Business Analytics, Machine Learning, Statistical Modelling, Optimization and Quality Management.
This two-year programme consists of 15 compulsory courses, 2 elective courses and a dissertation in the first three semesters; and live project work during the fourth semester. The classes for the first two semesters will be held in Bengaluru and the same for the third semester will be in Hyderabad. The project work in the fourth semester will be at the respective locations. The semester-wise list of courses is as follows:
Semester I: Statistics for decision Making-1 (SDM-1), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Project Management (PM), Reliability, Maintainability and Safety–1 (RMS-1), Total Quality Management (TQM), Operations Research –1 (OR-1).
Semester II: Statistics for decision Making–2 (SDM-2), Advanced Statistical Process Control (ASPC), Multivariate Data Analysis (MDA); Reliability, Maintainability and Safety–2 (RMS-2), Operations Research – 2 (OR-2), Elective.
Elective (any one of the following): Game Theory, Capability Maturity Models, Marketing Research, Data Base Management, Pattern Recognition, Neural Network, Markov Analysis and Modelling, Trouble Shooting & Problem-Solving for Quality Improvement (TS).
Semester III: Six Sigma – Business Excellence Strategy & Problem Solving Framework (SS), Operations Research – 3 (OR-3), Applied Regression Analysis, Quality Audit, Industrial Experimentation.
Semester IV: Dissertation; Project Work.
The offering of an elective course will depend on students’ interest and availability of teachers.
A candidate seeking admission to this course should have at least a three-year Bachelor’s Degree
Selection of candidates to this programme, including the sponsored ones, will be based on performance in written tests and subsequent interview. The academic record may also be taken into consideration. The written admission tests will comprise of multiple-choice and/or short- answer type questions in Mathematics at the undergraduate level
There is, however, a provision for sponsorship by government, semi-government, public sector undertakings, autonomous institutions and commercial/industrial organizations, which can sponsor candidates from their establishments, provided they satisfy the eligibility requirements. The Institute, at its discretion, may apply a different criterion for such candidates.
Most of the courses are taught using real-time simulation and packages such as R, Python, Minitab, Microsoft Excel and SAS
